For most people, the kitchen is one of the most used rooms in the home. That said, it’s common that people don’t actually enjoy spending time in their kitchen. Whether it’s due to their kitchen appliances being outdated, or not having enough room to work the way they’d like, there’s nothing worse than disliking a room you spend so much time in.
That’s why many homeowners decide to remodel their kitchen. At Mission West Kitchen & Bath we are in the business of providing all the materials needed for such a remodel, and as such we are in favor of kitchen remodeling projects. That said, we also want our clients to be happy with the end result. That’s why we recommend that you carefully consider these three things before you get started.
1. Think about what you need
You may think this is a silly thing to remind you to think about, but the reality is that while just about any homeowner is going to think about what they want, they may not separate that from what they need. Yes, you’ll want to think about the style of the kitchen you want but first and foremost you’ll need to consider your needs.
For example, a home with small children many need a kitchen island or bar with seats at is so that the kids can do their homeowner. A home for an older couple without children who entertain frequently would need a beverage station. There’s no right or wrong answer to what your kitchen needs as long as what you come up with is honest.
2. Make sure you’re thinking of the long term
If you intend to be in your home for the foreseeable future, then make sure you’re taking this into consideration. For example, don’t just think about the storage space you need today, think about the storage space you’ll need in the long run. Give yourself room to grow. Likewise, choose your countertops, cabinets, and other materials based not just on how they look but on how long they will last.
3. Sit down and write out a budget
It’s way too common that homeowners have a general budget in mind and that’s the end of it. The truth is that you need a more specific budget or you risk spending double or even triple what you’d planned. Start by deciding how much you can spend then divide that amount amongst the various things you need to spend money on. For example, you may allot a portion of your budget to flooring, a portion to fixtures, and a portion to appliances.
As you find the right materials for your kitchen remodel, make sure they fit within the budget. If they don’t, then you’ll need to do one of two things. First, consider just replacing it with something that’s more affordable. Second, take money from another area of your kitchen.
