When it comes to add lighting to a kitchen, we are proud of the many options available at Mission West Kitchen & Bath. That said, the best electrical lighting acts as an accent for beautiful, natural light. It’s an asset to your kitchen for many reasons: It can improve your mood, reduce your electric bills, and help ensure you get enough Vitamin D. We’ve come up with some options to help you make the most of the natural light in your kitchen.
Start by noting where your natural light is coming from
The first step is to figure out what you have to work with. Obviously, you’ll start with your windows. If you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen, consider adding larger windows or even adding one where there isn’t one now. Just remember that you need to leave enough wall space for kitchen cabinets and to put your kitchen appliances against.
You may also want to consider adding a skylight – but only if it fits in with the style of your kitchen and the architecture of your home. If your kitchen has an exterior door then you may want to choose one that has more glass. For example, a sliding patio door that’s made entirely of glass, or a hinged door that has a large glass window on top.
You can also take light from other rooms next to the kitchen. This is one of the reasons that an open home plan works well. Your kitchen can enjoy some of the natural sun that your living room or dining room may enjoy.
Make the most of the natural sunlight you get
Make sure you’re choosing the right window coverings that allow plenty of natural light into your kitchen. If you’ve noted that your kitchen is dark, or if you just wish there was more light, then consider swapping out your draperies for light fabrics.
You may also consider adding kitchen cabinets with glass fronts. They won’t bring in more light, but they can help the light to flow through your kitchen more effectively. You’ll want a kitchen that’s balanced as far as windows and cabinets are concerned, but adding glass fronted cabinets are a great way to make the most of light without giving up cabinet space.
Finally, consider that the colors you choose are an important part of how light your room feels. If you choose dark colors, then they’ll absorb the light and the kitchen will look darker in whole. On the other hand, painting or decorating in light colors will actually reflect light. This doesn’t mean your entire kitchen has to be white, but choosing lighter hues can not only help the room look airier, but it can make it look bigger.
